As Vice President Renown Health and Chief Operating officer of Renown Medical Group since 2011, Mark Behl has been an integral team member of Nevada’s only Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Network. He is member of the team responsible for leading and preparing the largest Medical Group in northern Nevada for the many changes of health care reform.
Behl holds a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ as well as a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nevada-Reno, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) – an international professional society of more than 40,000 health care executives who lead hospitals, health care systems and other health care organizations.
At Renown Health, he oversees the Medical Group including its 40 outpatient centers throughout northern Nevada. The geographic area includes 4 counties in both Reno-Sparks and rural Nevada. The population of this region is approximately 480,000.
The journey into healthcare was not a typical path for Behl. It began when his daughter was born in 2007. On her second day of life, she required complex surgeries that left her in the NICU for over a month. The experience had an incredible impact on him and left him thankful for the quality of healthcare, but feeling the need to find a way to improve the business side of his experience. He continued his education in health care management and began seeking increased responsibility and opportunity to make a difference in the industry.
Behl enjoys working for Renown Heath and says the most rewarding part of working there is hearing from a patient about a great experience they have had at one of their facilities. Knowing that a change they have made to a process; or the person they chose to hire; or an improvement workflow that has made someone’s life better – is extremely rewarding.
When he is not at Renown Health, he enjoys running trailheads throughout the Sierra Nevada mountain range, traveling the country and exploring the state of Nevada. His career then began to have him moving quite a bit until he finally returned to Nevada in 2002 for good. It seemed all roads led back to Nevada, which he considers the hidden jewel of the west. It’s a desert climate that enjoys the four seasons but in a milder way, which provides an incredible setting for many outdoor activities, including some of the best skiing in the United States. The Sierra Nevada mountain range surrounds the city giving it a great scenic look and is located a short 30 minutes from beautiful Lake Tahoe.
At the crux of patient experience is the idea of the Triple Aim: Improving the patient experience, achieving better health Through improved outcomes, and managing or reducing costs. Patient experience covers everything from building relationships and establishing trust, to harnessing data in order to provide the best service possible at the lowest cost possible. With the recent boom in “big data” (the capability of analyzing extremely large data sets via advanced computing in order to reveal larger patterns about behavior, trends, and associations), achieving the triple aim is becoming more and more attainable.
With over 5,500 employees, Renown Health is the largest locally owned not-for-profit healthcare network in Northern Nevada. The company is built on the belief that a healthy community requires the participation of every person and organization within it. Making a genuine difference in the health and well-being of the people and communities served is the primary goals of Renown Health.
Key to Renown Health’s success in fulfilling its mission is the network’s willingness to reach out to and work with local organizations and individuals. Recently Renown Health partnered with Nevada School of Medicine in order to start a new Master of Physician Assistant program aimed at increasing the number of healthcare professionals in the region. The first class is scheduled to begin in June 2017.
